چکیده

We use a very large simulation of the concordance ΛCDM cosmogony to study the clustering of dark matter haloes. For haloes less massive than about 10hM⊙ the amplitude of the two-point correlation function on large scales depends strongly on halo formation time. Haloes that assembled at high redshift are substantially more clustered than those that assembled more recently. The effect is a smooth function of halo formation time and its amplitude increases with decreasing halo mass. At 10hM⊙ the “oldest” 10% of haloes are more than 5 times more strongly correlated than the “youngest” 10%. This unexpected result is incompatible with the standard excursion set theory for structure growth, and it contradicts a fundamental assumption of the halo occupation distribution models often used to study galaxy clustering, namely that the galaxy content of a halo of given mass is statistically independent of its larger scale environment.

The Dependence of the Occupation of Galaxies on the Halo Formation Time

We study the dependence of the galaxy contents within halos on the halo formation time using two galaxy formation models, one being a semianalytic model utilizing the halo assembly history from a high resolution N-body simulation and the other being a smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation including radiative cooling, star formation, and energy feedback from galactic winds. We confirm the f...

The dependence of dark halo clustering on the formation epoch and the concentration parameter

We examine the age-dependence of dark matter halo clustering in an unprecedented accuracy using a set of 7 high-resolution cosmological simulations each with N = 1024 particles. We measure the bias parameters for halos over a large mass range using the cross-power-spectrum method that can effectively suppress the random noise even in the sparse sampling of the most massive halos. This enables u...

Are Galaxy Properties Only Determined by the Dark Matter Halo Mass?

Conditional luminosity function (CLF) of dark matter halos supersedes simple models on the number of galaxies as a function of the halo mass, or the so-called halo occupation number, by assigning a luminosity distribution to those galaxies. Suggestions have now been made that both the clustering strength and properties of hosted galaxies of a given dark matter halo depends also on the age and t...

The age dependence of galaxy clustering

We construct mock galaxy catalogues to analyse clustering properties of a Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) universe within a cosmological dark matter simulation of sufficient resolution to resolve structure down to the scale of dwarfs. We show that there is a strong age-clustering correlation for objects likely to host luminous galaxies, which includes the satellite halo (subhalo) population. Older mo...

Environmental Dependence of Cold Dark Matter Halo Formation

We use a high-resolution N -body simulation to study how the formation of cold dark matter (CDM) halos is affected by their environments, and how such environmental effects produce the age-dependence of halo clustering observed in recent N -body simulations. We estimate, for each halo selected at redshift z = 0, an ‘initial’ massMi defined to be the mass enclosed by the largest sphere which con...
